City of Dayton


The Birthplace of Aviation, Dayton was once home to powered flight inventors Wilbur and Orville Wright. Today the city offers great attractions and historical sites, fantastic arts venues, a thriving downtown, beautiful parks, a variety of sporting sites and fabulous shopping and dining.

The Greater Dayton population consists of approximately one million people. Wright Patterson Air Force Base employs over 20,000 civilians and has the largest Air Force Museum in the world. Also, the Dayton International Air Show is the second largest in the world. Dayton is the world headquarters for several large businesses, including Standard Register, NCR, and Lexus-Nexus. In addition, Dayton has several General Motor divisions, University of Dayton is a private school with approximately 10,000 students, and is well recognized nationwide. Wright State University has approximately 20,000 students and is a State school. Wright State University has a Medical School in which we actively participate. The University of Dayton has a well-established Law School. In addition to the Universities, Dayton has a nationally top-ranked community college, Sinclair, with over 22,000 students and a diverse curriculum.

Dayton has its own Philharmonic Orchestra, Ballet, and Opera Companies. The Victoria Theater and Memorial Hall stage musicals and plays. The Schuster Center, opened in 2003, provides a grand home for the performing arts in Dayton. The Dayton Art Institute has been present since the early 1900's, and the architecture is very beautiful and unique. It is currently one of the few museums in the world exhibiting the works of Degas. In addition, there are performances offered by Wright State University. The Fraze Pavilion and Wright State's Nutter Center both feature outstanding concerts and well-known entertainers. The Nutter Center is third most successful entertainment center in the world.

There are over 32 18-hole gold courses in the Dayton area as well as many outdoor/indoor tennis clubs. Over 100 raquetball and/or handball courts are available with all the competition you can handle. There are many beautiful camping facilities and lakes within 15-30 minutes of Dayton. One of the largest and newest is Ceasar's Creek State Park which has 10,500 acres, including a 2830 acre man-made lake, offering fishing, water skiing, and boating.

There are many exciting spectator sports in the area, one of which is the University of Dayton Flyers basketball team. Wright State also has a strong basketball program. Dayton has its own minor-league baseball team, the Dayton Dragons, which boast a downtown stadium with sellout attendance. The Cincinatti Bengals and Reds stadium is also located about 45 minutes from Dayton. The LPGA championship golf tournament is held at the Country Club of the North, a Jack Nicklaus designed course. Also located in Dayton is the NCR South course, which is ranked nationally in the top 75 courses.
